You Just Keep on Pushing My Love over the Borderline

Is it OK to set firm boundaries

even as we forgive those who trespass against us

How does one love with an open heart

but not wear one’s heart on her sleeve

or worse yet

leave it precariously propped

against a stone gathering moss

How do we

cut ties with all the lies

understand that blood is thicker than water

but to witness blood, one must be cut deep

a mortal wound

the beginning cause of these endings

And if thy right hand offend thee,
cut it off, and cast it from thee

Cut and cut and cut

Until there is nothing and no one

except pieces of forgotten poetry taped to the adobe brick wall of the home you make on the shore of her desert

wide and without fences

cigarettes and whiskey and only

and only

the sound of stars.
