Drinks with a Friend

A welcome change of tempo
her generous smile
and warm, attentive greeting

our sway of accommodation
cautious not to step on toes
or move to the off-beat
but familiar and easy

and not of the kind
that adjusts your spine
or calls attention to your flat-footed soul,

a simple sachet by comparison
to the tangled tango of intimates
who often miss the shoulder-tap cue.
